BULLETIN of the SI 2006



Welcome to the Summer Institute 2006 held from 23 August, 2006 at APCTP, Pohang, Korea.

  1. Venue

  2. Scientific Program

    Main lectures by 7 speakers and 21 short talks will be given at the auditorium of School of Environmental Science & Engineering, which is near the APCTP building, Hogil Kim Memorial Hall.
    Free meetings for discussions and communications are prepared at the APCTP rounge and APCTP seminar room, in Hogil Kim Memorial Hall #501 in every evening.

  3. Registration & Reception

    There will be the welcome reception from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Aug. 23rd at the APCTP rounge in Hogil Kim Memorial Hall #501. You can register at the reception on Aug. 23rd, and can also register during the workshop after Aug. 23rd. The registration fee is 100,000 Korean won.
    We suggest that you come to your accomodations and check-in first. If you want to come to the reception:

    • From Youngildae hotel to the APCTP building, it costs about 2,000 won by taxi.
    • Faculty APT (Guest House) and Sangnam kwan are inside the campus and of the walking distance.
    • Ramada Hotel is far from the campus and it will cost more than 6,000 won to the APCTP. We cannot strongly constrain the participants of the Ramada Hotel to attend the reception.


  4. The POSTECH buildings are always locked even in office hour. Thus you will get the card key and are asked to deposit 10,000 won for the card key when you register. The deposit will be returned when you return the card key to the APCTP. On the 23rd, somebody will help you to enter the APCTP building for 3:00 - 8:00 p.m.. at the gate of the APCTP building, Hogil Kim Memorial Hall #501. If you arrive at the APCTP building and find nobody at the gate, you call to the APCTP office to ask opening the gate, using this number: 279-8662.


  5. Transportation

    A few possible path from Incheon airport to Pohang is shown here.

    • Incheon Airport - Limousine Bus - Pohang - Taxi - APCTP (or your hotel)

    • Incheon Airport - Limousine Bus - Seoul Station - Train (transfre at Dongdaegu Station) - Pohang Station - Taxi - APCTP (or your hotel)

    • Incheon Airport - Limousine Bus - Seoul Station - Train - Dongdaegu Station - Taxi - APCTP (or your hotel)

    • Incheon Airport - Limousine Bus - Seoul Gangnam Express Bus Terminal - Express Bus - Pohang Bus Terminal - Taxi - APCTP (or your hotel)

    • Incheon Airport - Limousine Bus - Gimpo Airport - Flight - Pohang Airport - Taxi - APCTP (or your hotel)

    These are a few notes on the travel.

    • Limousine bus from Incheon airport to Seoul station starts per 15 min. Price is about 13,000 won. It takes 1 hour.
    • There is KTX (express train) from Seoul station to Dongdaegu station. It costs 34,900 won and takes about one and half hours.
    • If you take a taxi from Dongdaegu to Pohang, it costs about 60,000 won and takes less than 1 hour.
    • If you transfer the train to Pohang at Dongdaegu, it takes 2 hours from Dongdaegu to Pohang. It costs 2,600 won for the commuter railroad or 8,700 won for Saemaeul train.
    • If you take a taxi from Busan to Pohang, it costs about 120,000 won.


  6. Accomodation
    Arrangement of the accomodation is presented in this web page.

    Note on the check-in / check-out:

    • The invited lecturers stay at the Youngildae Hilton Hotel. The accomodation fee is included in the financial support for the travel and we will pay it to the APCTP at the moment of registration. You check-in/check-out at the hotel by yourselves.

    • For other participants who stay at the Youngildae Hilton Hotel, the acomodation fee is partly supported. You check-in/check-out at the hotel and should pay 40,000 won per night to APCTP when you register. (Please do not pay it to the hotel!)

    • Participants who stay at the Sangnamkwan (Student Dormitories #20) have to check-in at the Dormitory Office (Student Dormitories #14) after 1:00 p.m.. For the location of the Sangnamkwan (Student Dormitories #20) and the Dormitory Office (Student Dormitories #14), please refer to this picture. When you check-out, you have to go the same office before 11:00 a.m.. You should pay 20,000 won per night to the APCTP when you register.

    • Participants who stay at the Faculty APT (Guest House) have to check-in at the front office of the APT (#5) after 1:00 p.m.. When you check-out, you have to go the same office before 11:00 a.m.. You should pay 20,000 won per night to the APCTP when you register.

    • Most of the students stay at the Ramada Encore Hotel outside the POSTECH campus. You have to check-in/check-out at the hotel but need not pay the accomodation fee, which is fully supported.

    • Student participants who stay at the Sangnamkwan or the Faculty APT need not pay the accomodation fee either.


  7. There will be an excursion to Gyeongju on the Sunday, Aug. 27th. Gyeongju was the capital of the old Kingdom, Shilla more than 1,000 years ago and one of the most famous tourist city in Korea. The excursion fee is 40,000 won including the bus, lunch, tickets, and an English guide. Please apply to us when you register.


  8. The free lunch coupon will be served. The cafeteria is Jigok Community Center near the APCTP building. You can find it in this map.


  9. There will be a shuttle bus service from the Ramada Encore Hotel via the Youngildae Hilton Hotel to the APCTP in every morning, for 24th - 30th (except for 27th, Sunday). The bus will start the Ramada Encore Hotel at 8:25 a.m. and stop by the Youngildae Hilton Hotel at 8:45 a.m. and arrive at the workshop place at 9:00 a.m.. If you miss the bus at the Ramada Encore Hotel, you have to take a taxi since the public transportation is inconvenient from the Ramada Hotel to the APCTP. It costs about 6,000 won from the Hotel to the POSTECH. Youngildae Hotel is marginal for the walking distance and it will take 20-30 minutes on foot. Please refer this map. If you take a taxi, it costs about 2,000 won from the Hotel to the POSTECH.
