Prof. Misao Sasaki, the 10th President of APCTP, Elected as ISGRG Fellow 2025

 

Professor Misao Sasaki, the 10th President of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), was elected as a Fellow of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (ISGRG): http://www.isgrg.org/fellows.php

 

Professor Sasaki, who has recently begun his term as the 10th President of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), was elected as an ISGRG Fellow 2025, in recognition of his world-class research achievements in theoretical physics.

 

Being elected as an ISGRG Fellow is a distinguished honor granted to only a small number of researchers worldwide. It is awarded triennially to a highly appointed group of researchers who have demonstrated outstanding and sustained contributions in areas such as general relativity, gravitational theory, cosmology, and black hole physics. Candidates are also recognized for their leadership in nurturing the next generation of scientists and their active service to the academic community. Notable past Fellows include internationally renowned physicists and Nobel Laureates such as Stephen William Hawking, Kip S. Thorne (Nobel Prize in Physics, 2017), Rainer Weiss (Nobel Prize in Physics, 2017), and Roger Penrose (Nobel Prize in Physics, 2020).

 

The ISGRG is the world’s leading academic societies dedicated to the advancement of general relativity, gravitational theory, cosmology, and quantum gravity. It hosts the General Relativity (GR) Conference every three years, the largest and most influential event in the field, where the latest research is presented and Nobel Laureates are often invited as keynote speakers. The ISGRG also publishes the top-tier international journal General Relativity and Gravitation, covering key areas such as gravitational theory, cosmology, and numerical relativity.

 

Professor Sasaki has received numerous distinguished honors, including the Humboldt Research Award (2008)*, the Daiwa Adrian Prize (2010)**, and the Benjamin W. Lee Professorship Award (2024)*** in Theoretical Physics. He is widely recognized for his outstanding achievements, particularly for laying the theoretical foundations that underpin modern cosmology. With his appointment as the 10th President of APCTP and his selection as an ISGRG Fellow, APCTP will further strengthen its efforts to attract top-tier research talent from around the world and expand the foundation for basic science both in Korea and globally.

* Humboldt Research Award: Granted annually by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany) to internationally renowned researchers in humanities, natural sciences, and engineering.

** Daiwa Adrian Prize: Awarded biennially by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation to UK-Japan joint research teams in science or applied science with notable collaborative results.

*** Benjamin W. Lee Professorship Award: Named in honor of the late Prof. Benjamin W. Lee, a pioneering theoretical physicist. Presented annually by APCTP since 2012 to researchers with exceptional promise or achievement in theoretical physics.

 

Established in 1996 following an APEC summit, APCTP is an international theoretical physics center hosted by the Republic of Korea. Collaborating with 19 member countries and 35 partner institutions across the Asia-Pacific region, APCTP has nurtured over 300 early-career researchers to date. The Center is supported by Korea’s Science and Technology Promotion Fund and Lottery Fund, and actively carries out in-house research programs, academic and global cooperation programs. Through its scientific outputs, public engagement, and outreach initiatives, APCTP is committed to maximizing public value and returning the benefits of basic science to society.

 

 

(재)아시아태평양이론물리센터 제 10대 소장 미사오 사사키(Misao Sasaki) 교수, 2025 ISGRG Fellow 선정

 

(재)아시아태평양이론물리센터(이하 APCTP)의 제10대 소장으로 선임된 미사오 사사키(Misao Sasaki) 교수가 이론물리에 있어 세계적인 연구 업적을 인정받는 2025년도 ISGRG(International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, 일반상대성·중력 국제학회)의 Fellow로 선정 (http://www.isgrg.org/fellows.php) 되었다.

 

ISGRG Fellow는 전 세계적으로 극히 제한된 연구자에게만 수여되는 명예로, 이론물리학 및 중력 연구 분야에서 세계적인 권위를 의미하며 3년마다 선정한다. 일반상대성이론, 중력 이론, 우주론, 블랙홀 등 관련 분야에서 탁월한 연구 성과를 거두고, 학계의 리더로서 후학 양성, 학문 공동체 기여, 국제적 리더십 등을 두루 갖춘 인물을 선정한다. 故 스티븐 호킹(Stephen William Hawking), 킵 손(Kip S. Thorne, 2017년 노벨물리학상 수상), 라이너 바이스(Rainer Weiss, 2017년 노벨물리학상 수상), 로저 펜로즈(Roger Penrose, 2020년 노벨물리학상 수상) 교수 등 노벨물리학상 수상자를 포함한 세계적 석학들이 ISGRG Fellow에 다수 소속되어 있다.

 

ISGRG는 전 세계 중력이론 및 상대성이론 연구자들이 모여 학술 교류와 연구 발전을 도모하는 해당 분야에서 가장 권위 있는 국제 학회 중 하나이다. 중력 연구 분야의 국제 허브 역할을 하고 있으며, 중력과 상대성이론 분야에서 가장 규모가 크고 영향력 있는 학회인 GR(General Relativity) 학술대회를 3년 주기로 개최하며, 최신 연구 발표와 더불어 노벨물리학상 수상자를 연사로 초청한다. 이외에도 중력이론, 우주론, 수치상대론 등에서 최상위급 국제학술지(General Relativity and Gravitation)를 발행한다.

 

사사키 교수는 2008년 훔볼트 연구상*, 2010년 다이와 아드리안상**, 2024년 이휘소상(이론물리학 부문)*** 수상 등 뛰어난 수상 이력을 보유하고 있으며 현대 우주론 연구의 핵심적 기반을 마련하는 등 탁월한 성과를 인정받고 있다. APCTP는 제10대 소장으로 사사키 교수를 선임한 것을 계기로, 국내외 우수 연구 인력 확보와 기초과학 저변 확대에 더욱 힘쓸 계획이다.

** 다이와 아드리안상(Daiwa Adrian Prize) : 다이와 앵글로-재팬 재단에서 격년으로 순수과학 또는 응용과학 분야에서 일본-영국 간 공동연구를 수행하며 우수한 성과를 거둔 연구팀에게 수여

*** 이휘소상 : 이론물리학 발전에 획기적인 공헌을 한 故 이휘소 박사의 이름을 딴 국내 유일의 학술 프로그램으로, 아태이론물리센터에서 2012년부터 매년 전도유망하거나 탁월한 성과를 창출한 과학자를 찾아 시상하고 그간의 연구 경험과 학문적 성과를 공유

 

한편, APCTP는 1996년 아시아태평양경제협력기구(APEC) 회의를 계기로 설립된, 우리나라가 유치한 국내 유일의 국제이론물리센터다. 현재 아태 지역 19개 회원국 및 35개 협정기관과 협력 관계를 맺고 있으며, 지금까지 300여 명의 신진연구자를 유치하고 양성해 왔다. 정부의 과학기술진흥기금 및 복권기금의 지원을 바탕으로 지속적인 성장과 연구 협력 확대를 이어가며, 아시아태평양 지역의 이론물리 및 기초과학 분야에서 공동연구와 학술 교류를 활발히 촉진하고 있다. 또한, 대중을 위한 과학 콘텐츠의 성과 확산과 사회 환원을 통해 공익적 가치를 증진하고자 다양한 활동을 전개하고 있다.
